Hi there,
In the score breakdown video, Pinar mentioned that her instrumentation is based on instruments played by a real orchestra, I remember. Would it be acceptable to (sparingly) use pads by Stephensons Steam Band (part of Albion One) or other synth pads? Or am I better off "padding" out with orchestral instruments?
Thanks much and also many thanks to Pinar and the guys at Spitfire for putting this all together !
Cheers, Roland

Hey @Roland, The choice of sounds and styles used is yours! We can't advise directly on compositional choices, unfortunately. I would recommend checking out the announcement video to see the Judging Criteria https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KfwQOZ3QDFw

Hello @mod, Thank you! That did the trick !

I'm not seeing my entry contained in this link that you have listed, although I have received a confirmation email from Spitfire after I filled out the Google form. Should I be worried that I'm not seeing my entry under this direct hashtag link? Thanks!

Hi @Grajkowski - No need to worry! If you received a confirmation email it means we have a link to your submission on file and will review it when judging time begins.

Hello fellow composers!
Just wanted to know what to do with the copyright claim on my submission? Did anyone else get it? Should I just ignore it?
Thanks!

Just ignore it, it's not a strike. Same thing happened with Westworld. It is just letting you know it is copyrighted material but you do have permission to use it for the contest

In the submission rules it asks you to confirm that you have not altered the original dx/sfx audio. Does this mean we couldn't add a mastering plugin to the entire session, somewhat affecting the film audio? Or as long as we aren't eq'ing the audio, ducking the sound down, etc. we are fine?

Thanks much!

Okay! Thanks for the advice!

Be sure to contest it if you A) think it's unfair and/or B) have the video monetized and it's your original work.
Some people go all over YouTube claiming on videos, they don't get contested, then they can soak up monetization income. It's basically a business.

Hey all,
The copyright claim is most definitely not a strike.
Have a look at this excerpt from the Getting Started video which explains the claim:
2 -
The submission form states:
"I confirm that I have not altered/affected either the original dialogue and FX audio or the original visual content"
Does this also refer to audio levels? Should we not touch any of those levels in order to balance it with the music?

I think you should be fine with general adjustment of audio levels. Paul Thompson talks about that in his Getting Started video for the competition. It's worth a look!

Hi, I don´t have audio.Tried everything...

I had a similar issue but I was able to resolve it when I tried a different DAW. I wasn't able to load any audio in Ableton Live on Windows. However I could load the audio in Studio One.
If you have access to another DAW (maybe a demo?) perhaps you'll be able to load and export the audio.

Is it okay if I change the video format since my fl studio does not support .MOV files

There is still some confusion (or maybe it's just me) about the mixing of the Stargirl competition.
So obviously we can adjust the volume of the Vox track to suit our composition.
I know that we can't make changes to the actual content of the Vox track, which makes sense.
Should we submit our work with the Vox track muted?
Should we submit our work together with the changes to the volume levels of the Vox track?
You're judging the score but the correct mixing of the Vox with the music is a crucial part of the final mix.
Thanks
Paul

Hi Peeps,
I've asked Pinar this also, but want your take on this please.
I'm on with this awesome opportunity, but please can I clarify....
To win, we bring our own interpretation to tell the story and help the dialog and effects, but do we use the official 'themes' of Stargirl and Stripes by doing a remix of official theme, therefore keeping it 'authentic' or totally our own thing, even if not 'themed' but hopefully to show how we feel how we would have done it if we had landed the gig ?
Hope it makes sense.
Cheers
Craig

You will not be penalised for adjusting the overall volume levels of the Dialogue and FX Track but you should look to adjust your score levels first if the Dialogue and FX are not balancing with the score. You should not add any additional FX to the Dialogue track other than FX that help with volume leve

@emeeme if you are on Windows, you will need to install Quicktime Player in order to run the .mov. If that is not the issue, please let us know what DAW you are using.

Yes, as long as the conversion process does not change the video length or original audio.

You should submit your entry with the original Dialogue and Sound FX track provided with the clip. If you do not include the original Dialogue and FX your submission will be disqualified.
There should be no need to adjust the Dialogue and FX levels provided, and you should look to automate your score track levels instead. One of the aspects that will be judged is how well you balance the soundtrack with the original audio.
1 -
You should not use any of the notated material or themes from the original show. You may choose to use similar instrumentation, but the score you produce must be your own original material.
This is also the case for any scores that use rewritten material (e.g. a rescored version of a classical piece of music to fit the scene). Any rescores, remixes or recreations will be disqualified.
