Where can I find the competition rules?
All of the rules are available at https://www.spitfireaudio.com/stargirl/rules/
When is the competition deadline?
The competition closes at 23:59 BST on 12th August 2021
Who is Judging the competition?
Pinar Toprak and the team at Spitfire Audio
How do I attend the mentoring session if I win?
The mentoring session will be held online, via video call at a convenient time and date for Pinar Toprak and the winner
Does it matter where I live?
This competition is worldwide, however, it is important to note that some countries and regions don’t permit these types of competitions; so it is important to check to see if your region or country allows the competition prior to entering
Can I enter if I’m under 18?
If you’re under 18 years old then you’ll need permission from your parent/guardian. Proof of permission should be provided upon request from Spitfire Audio
How do I know whether my entry has been received?
You will receive an automated confirmation email once you have successfully completed the entry form
How do I know whether my entry has been judged?
Once your entry has been viewed on YouTube a comment will be left by our team
I want to edit my submission, can I?
We can only accept one entry from each entrant, but you can edit your entry at any time before the closing date (23:59 BST on the 12th August 2021). Just click the “Edit response” button in the confirmation email you received from Google Forms
I don’t have a YouTube account, do I need one?
You will need to set up a YouTube account in order to submit to this competition. If you already have a Gmail email address, simply login to YouTube using this
Do views and subscribers count?
Not at all, the competition is about your skills as a composer
Can you give me feedback on my entry?
If you’re looking for feedback we’d suggest sharing your submission in this thread, our community is very supportive and encouraging. We would love to provide feedback to everyone that enters but the number of entries we receive in competitions makes that extremely difficult to do!
Can I collaborate on my entry?
We can only accept one entry per person and one person per entry
Can I use my submission in my portfolio/CV?
You’re welcome to use your submission, providing you clearly state that it was for a competition and was not commissioned, or endorsed by either DC Entertainment or Spitfire Audio
Do I need to use Spitfire Audio sounds in my music to enter this competition?
Nope! You don’t have to include Spitfire libraries in your score – but you must be the legal owner of any sounds, sample libraries, or virtual instruments you use
Can I make reference to other scores in my score?
We cannot accept any entries that break copyright law

A quick question regarding the collaboration. I have a friend that I typically go to for vocal recordings. Is it okay to use live vocals? Or for the basis of this contest stick to samples?

How can I download the clip as it says that I do not have access?
Sorry, got there myself.
Use an existing google account. then the clip can be downloaded although be aware that with heavy demand it may not be available to download immediately.

What a wonderful opportunity. As such, please can I check what might be a stupid question.
Where does the clip end for the music please ?
Is it before, or at the point of fadeout to the end credit ie 1:41 minutes, or are we running music on past this 'edit point' to the end.

Hi @Kent - Using live vocals and non-sample-library sounds is absolutely fine. The collaboration rule simply means you cannot co-write the score together and submit as two people. Only one composer per entry, and one entry per composer!

Hi @Craig_Aspin - This is totally up to you - no need to score all the way through the credits, but if you feel inspired to you certainly can! The judging is specifically for the music involved with the scene.

This is a very exciting competition,
Just wondering what would be the best practice regarding copyright.
Is there a need to register the score before submitting? Does it matter for the competition?

I note that the competition is open to professionals who, for example write scores for games. I think it would be nice for amateurs if there was a special prize for best submission by a non-professional.

Just my opinion but, there are many professionals who shoot bad video and produce/write bad music. It’s like beauty, and in the eye of the beholder. Whether paid or not this is a creative endeavor and each “beholder” will judge (no pun intended) if it’s good or not.

Hi there, so might be a bit of a no brainer question but are we allowed to modify the video in any way, the last sad ending is sad so I was wondering if I could maybe do a fade to black or add an extra clip to elongate that sad part because it really short

From what I read in the rules that's forbidden. Most likely by Warner Brothers.
"You may not modify the Stargirl Clip in any way and the entire clip must be uploaded for your entry to count. "

Hi, I have a question about the submission, the score for the submission does it means that I need to transcribe my music to score writing/manuscript for the submission?

Hi, first time scoring for a scene, great opportunity to practice! I have a question regarding the physical score. Do I need to score my ideas out or can I just record them straight into logic or cubase along side the clip without a written notated score?

Can you weave in existing Stargirl musical themes into your composition? If so, how much? In my mind composing for an existing series implies I should be able to use existing material and DC must at least be partly onboard with composers writing in a competition for their IP. However, I know the material is already copyrighted. This grey area seems a little dangerous for the entrants - please advise :)

Hi @FlashJay and @mattjohnspiano27 - No, there is no need to transcribe your scores into musical notation. The only acceptable format of entry is the YouTube link to the scene with your score's audio.

Hi @Andrew_Reeds - if you are under 18 years of age you must make sure your legal guardian approves of you entering the competition. If they consent to your entry and you submit your score, you must be prepared to share proof when asked. We will work with you when the time comes to find proper supporting documentation that works for everyone involved!

Any chance of accepting other video upload sites (e.g. Vimeo)? YouTube is the gorilla and all, but some folks prefer using other sites for a variety of reasons, and they all function the same (click link, watch video). Thanks!

Help please! I entered 2 days ago and got the online confirmation at the end of the sign-in form (saw the link to update my Youtube link there). The form says "A copy of your responses will be emailed to the address you provided," but I have not received this email yet. Checked spam and trash folders, too. I have remixed my entry based on feedback and want to re-submit my Youtube link for the contest, but my computer restarted which closed that page. When I return to that page, it wants me to fill out the form again--but you take only one entry per email, so. it seems that filling it out again would make a problem. I assume the resubmit link is in the confirmation email, right? When will that be sent? Help?

Hey @LRR, Your confirmation email will have been sent to your email after completing the submission form. This email will also contain the link to edit your entry. There is a high chance this may have been redirected or filtered within your inbox, do you have a Social/POP/Trash folder in your email?

This might be a sily question but I am a bit paranoid haha. I submitted my video two days but forgot the hashtag but later applied it to my video, did I get disqualified for not having that hashtag in there initially or is it all right now that I have changed it ?

I have re-checked my spam and trash folders. It is not there. I do not have a Social/POP folder. I would be inclined to think that perhaps I did not actually complete the submission, except that I did see the confirmation screen and the link to update. What do I do? Is there any way you can trigger a resend? [email protected]
