Is it possible to get a bowing effect like the one used on the Beatles 'Elenore Rigby' ? I've tried but can't get near it.
Staccato, spiccato, and marcato attacks seem to be the closest to what you're hearing. A solo library, as opposed to ensemble library, will also get you close to the individual timbres.

There's quit a few videos on youtube of string arrangements for that song but this has a good camera view of the bowing techniques. I can't vouch for the authenticity as I imagine George Martin and Paul gave the performers specific bowing instructions. I believe the original was a double quartet.
