Articulation settings in BBCSO

I have the latest version of BBCSO. It seems like some articulation in the various instruments are not configured for switching settings. Some are set to key switches and some aren’t. Seems totally random.

  • Any instrument / library in particular I can double check for you? :)

  • BBCSO I just checked the Cello patch and it has this issue. But many other instruments have it too.

  • I unfortunately only have Discover BBCSO, but it was fully operational with BRSO. Do you mean pro/core?

  • @Antkn33 by default, each Technique should be attached to a different Keyswitch from C-2 onwards. If you have found a mistake with this, do send a screenshot of the preset that is causing an issue, and I'll see if I can replicate this on my side.

I uploaded a template for BBC Discover BRSO over on Imageline. I'll add it here. This has been checked by others too with no problems brought up. It may work for you if you're using discover.

  • Ok, so this occurs in BBCSO Core. It happens when I am creating a preset, for example Celli. I remove all the articulations and add the ones I want. The added articulations have no keyswitch settings. I attaches a photo.

  • @Antkn33 This has happened because you have emptied out and reloaded the techniques within the plugin. It's something the team are currently investigating, but if you reload the main Celli patch, then remove the tehcniques you do not require, instead of removing all and adding back in, the keyswitches should still remain. Otherwise, you can simply add the Keyswitches back in by clicking on the dropdown next to Triggers.

  • Yeah it would definitely be appreciated if the defaults were included when adding back an articulation. Even if I add the keyswitch it just defaults to c-1 for everything which is not very helpful.

This product needs to come with a buyer caveat. WILL NOT FUNCTION PROPERLY 'OUT OF THE BOX' IN STUDIO ONE.

It seems to have exactly the same problem as Solo Strings. Which is that the key switching malfunctions.

The nice support people pointed me to a video with a resolution for this. The resolution is to manually enter a 'Sound variation' for every articulation in every patch.

I've almost finished doing this for Solo Strings....

BBC SO Core has 344 'techniques'. That's 344 lines of typing and saving and organizing in my DAW. It's going to take hours. Why? I have software from other VI producers. None of it has this problem. It seems to be Spitfire specific. The alternative is to lash out €85.50 (presumably with VAT on top). Either way, it's sucked the joy out of this buy.

To 'add insult to injury' - neither Solo Strings nor BBC SO Core come with anything as useful as a list of instruments with their corresponding articulations and Key switches. Presumably customers have to screen shot these or scribble them down before they start attacking the product deficiencies?

It's a real shame, as the sound quality is excellent. Acknowledging the problem and providing some tools to help users resolve the issues would go a long way.

  • To continue from my previous post. It should NOT be left to buyers to have to work out what is going wrong. The video you posted (some years ago) is Abbey Road One focused. Your panel for this product indicates that notes are /should be set to start at "Legato C-1". This does not work for BBCSO Core. I eventually resolved this through implementing articulations, playing them back and watching what was happening to the articulation switching in your control panel. It was all over the place and not working.

Starting the key switching at "Legato C-2" and moving up through the 20 articulations to "Spicatto Con Sordino G-1" works.

Spitfire Audio should be testing their products with various DAWs, establishing the correct settings, and then clearly communicating them to customers. Not vice-versa.

It might be useful to provide more guidance too - such as - you only need to set up one set of sound variations in strings - it will function over all the individual instruments? I didn't create 5 sets of 20 variations, but it might have been a reasonable expectation to make - that I needed to - in the absence of any guidance.

I'm expecting the same sort of - you bought it, you make it work, approach on Apassionata Strings.
